Nokia to launch digital terminal
--------------------------------
As part of a European launch, Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals is
launching its Mediamaster DVB 9200S Free To Air.

- an easy-to-use digital satellite receiver with capabilities to receive
clear unencrypted digital programmes

The Nokia Mediamaster DVB 9200S Free To Air is a member of a new family
of multimedia terminals and digital satellite receivers from Nokia and
is not only fully DVB (digital video broadcast) MPEG 2 compliant but is
a flexible and easy-to-use digital satellite receiver.

It has a dynamically variable bandwidth from 2 to 54mhz (1 to 45MS/s)
allowing optimal use of any transponder and is capable of receiving both
SCPC (single channel per carrier) and MCPC (multi channel per carrier)
channels from both Ku-band and C-band satellites. The Mediamaster's
Electronic Programme Guide enables users to scroll through hundreds of
channels on offer and preprogramme their own personal selection of
channels. The receiver will also sort channel numbers and satellites so
programmes or broadcasts can be selected by name.

The Mediamaster DVB 9200S Free To Air is available from the end of March
1997 and has a suggested retail price of 530 Pound Sterling (or 900 US
Dollar or 1400 Deutsch Mark).

SME Comment: No tecnical specifications nor test reports are available
for this product yet. I will present them as soon they become available.

GORIZONT 24, 80 East, http://www.satcodx.com/g24.html
EXPRESS 6, 80 East, http://www.satcodx.com/e6.html
---------
On frequency 4.125 GHz, Rc, a colorbar test card in PAL was observed,
with a subcarrier on 6.60 MHz.

The test card of RTR became quite good visible from Gorizont 24, on the
same frequency as previous on Express 6, 3.675 GHz, Rc, for the first
time since quite a while, at around 01:00 CET last night, with the
channels logo in the upper left of the screen.

The reason is obvious: while now transmitting from a heavy inclined
satellite with a broader beam, twice a day the picture will become
visible for me in Cairo. The rest of the day (almost 18 hours) nothing
can be seen whatsoever.

Earlier RTR transmissions from Express 6 could never be seen in Cairo,
just a shadow of a signal was received.

PANAMSAT 4, 68.5 East, http://www.satcodx.com/pas4.html
----------
On channel 21 (FUT1) of the DStv package of Showtime was this morning a
lot of digital noise received, visible as thousands of small square
blocks in various colours, snowing around the screen. The effect had
dissapeared in the afternoon.

Channel 22 (FUT2) is still transmitting an unknown encrypted signal and
on Channel 23 are two white lines visible, around the center of the
screen.

All channels in the 1stNet DStv package are still free-to-air. All
channels in the Showtime package are encrypted again, after the
fre-to-air transmissions as part of the "Big Movie Weekend", including
the Style and Discovery Channel.

EUTELSAT II-f1, 13 East, http://www.satcodx.com/e2f1.html
--------------
Euronews started this morning with the announced new progamm structure
from 06:00-09:00, which was also seen between 19:00-23:00 CET. News
starts at every quarter hour, opening with "the Headlines".

All on-screen logos have changed, "EURO" is now in white, "NEWS" in
blue, with a new typeface, and a digital clock has been added on top of
the logo, showing hours and minutes, only. Between the individual news
reports, the globe has been replaced with a "map-movie", focussing on
the country of origin of the news, a country or city name is presented
in the first 20 seconds of each individual report. The sound effects
have changed, and the graphics of the programm layout hve changed.

New is also a more aggresive "self-marketing" of Euronews, with
announcements and previews of productions and a more direct approach
towards the viewers.

INTELSAT 707, 1 West, http://www.satcodx.com/i707.html
------------
The test cards on transponder 111X-A and 73A, on resp. 10.967 GHz, V,
and 11.136 GHz, V, returned late Sunday evening, the first even this
time with an active subcarrier on 6.60 MHz.

The same transponder was used today for feeds for Sports Channel 5: test
card text: "J.C.S.-O.B-01".

Gorizont 26, 11 West, http://www.satcodx.com/g26.html
-----------
This satellite is now getting increasingly inclined, last reported
figures showed an inclination of almost 2.5 degrees, which results in
more and more difficulties to get a proper picture, especially on larger
dish sizes.

Despite this unfortunate fact, the absence of ORT on this satellite, as
well as on Express 2, at 14 West and Gorizont 32, at 53 East, could be
observed.
Due to unknown cause the Russian test card was shown, on all transponder
with the same timing, all in good quality.

VRT on this satellite 3.725 GHz, Rc, showed also at 08:15 CET the
Russian test card only.

Best regards,

Henk C. Room / Sat-MidEast / Cairo - Egypt
