Launch Failures Lead To China Change
BEIJING, China, 97/01/06 (TS) -- A series of embarassing failures of Long
March rockets has apparently cost China's head of the Commission of
Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense his job. In a Reuter
despatch from the Chinese capital the news agency reported 61-year-old
Lieutenant-General Cao Gangchuan has been named the new chief in response
to the failures.

Cao will succeed General Ding Henggao who, officially, is retiring due to
old age. He is apparently over 65 years old. Sources told the British news
agency that the failures had, in fact, more to do with the change than age.
