Japan's H2 Launches Satellites
  TANEGASHIMA, Japan, 96/08/17 (TS) -- Japan's H2 rocket has successfully
launched an earth observation and amateur radio satellite. The launch is the
fourth for the new rocket and took place at 1054 JST Saturday morning from
the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) launch pad at
Tanegashima Space Center.

  A malfunctioning alarm delayed the launch for 24 minutes while engineers
re-checked to suspected fault only to find nothing was wrong.

  The scientific satellite, named Advanced Earth Observing Satellite
(ADEOS), includes a measurement device from NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory. It was released 15 minutes after launch while the amateur radio
satellite was launched 37 minutes into the mission.

  Despite the successful launch full commercialization seems some distance
away. An H2 launch is estimated to cost around twice the price of a launch
on Europe's Ariane rocket.
