As a matter of fact, I was afraid of 2.2 version from the very start.
That's why I decided to avoid watching "Astra" channels, but if a really
cool show was on the schedule, watch it only from the red menu. Using this
simple policy I kept a 2.1
version for myself, and by now skipped following problems:
in version 2.2
- red menue is half cut. Sub-menus 2 (Video menu), 3 (Audio menu), 7 (CA
Menu)
and 9 (PSI/SI test menu) do not exist anymore.
- The blue menu entirely deleted. About the point how usefull it is I will
say more in this issue.
- D-box's possibility of searching for some PID-codes automatically in the
red menu killed.
Besides of all this, non-carefull fans of Astra channels got more even more
trouble,
but I will not write about all that since I haven't operated 2.2 myself.
All limitations
are depicted from words of people I know, limited red menu I saw myself,
while working on "Sviaz".
I didn't work with 2.2 and do not plan to replace my 2.1 with any other.

2) How to program main menu channels using the red menu
---------------------------------------------------------------
Some d-box owners some time ago were very disappointed by the following
situation.
After having their dishes pointed to 16 deg. east and having "Manuelle
Kanalsuche"
completed for TMF, they found the channel stored in main menu, for example
as n.68.
After that, they did "Manuelle Kanalsuche" again, but for TV 10 Gold
channel.
And TV 10 Gold was stored in the same position (our example - 68) TMF used
before, erasing TMF.
Yeah, before this time it was hard or impossible to store SCPC or
non-standart
digital channels in d-box's main menu, but now I've probably got a solution
for those with 2.1 version or lower installed in their d-boxes.
Well, for our example, let's try Tylko Muzyka channel from Hot Bird 1.
Let's try to store it using "Manuelle Kanalsuche". Unsuccessfull, eh ?
The zero, which just have appeard at the bottom of the search screen,
convinces
you to go to the red menu. Don't hurry - this comes later. Better use blue
menu now,
but be very carefull, do not experiment with it, since it can kill the 22
kHZ switch in your d-box with it's bug and give you some other horrorfull
surprises as a present (this is the reason why blue menu was erased in
2.2).
So. Choose a channel you don't like to watch from those stored in the main
menu
of your d-box. Better if it will be the channel where your d-box stores
SCPC-channels.
(In my d-box it's channel 68, on yours it will be a different one).
Press MENU on the remote control.Then press "UP" key (not arrow!) - the
cursor
will move to "Einstellungen". Press OK and enter 0000. On the screen will
be the menu we are used to do "Automatische" or "Manuelle Kanalsuche" from.
Enter 0000 again. The screen will become white, and at the top of it, on
the blue background, a small menu of following contents will appear:

Outdoor Unit Configuration
Tuning Settings
Service Settings
Conditional Access System
Now choose Tuning Settings and press OK. Be carefull, I have already said
that incorrect moves in the blue menu can hurt your d-box.
The screen will display something like this:

These are the parameters of a channel or a package which was stored on the
chosen
channel number before.
Now press quickly (it is very important!) RADIO-99-RADIO-MENU.
If the delay between pressed buttons will be more then half of a second,
you will not be able to continue, and d-box will return to the
Einstellungen menu.
So, we're in the red menu now. As you can notice after checking submenu 8,
parameters of the channel you took from main menu are stored there.
Remember - do not exit the red menu and do not switch "red" channels while
you're programming. Enter parameters of the channel you want to store as
described
in Digital Special vol.2. For Tylko Muzyka (our example) channel they are
11.453 H,
SR 6.111, FEC 3/4. D-box will find PID-codes itself. Enter frequency,
symbol rate,
FEC, polarization, and finish by pressing the traditional OK on "Select to
save parameters ?". The programmed channel should appear on the screen.
Now you can exit the red menu, press TV-RADIO-TV.
The channel number you used for programming should have the new channel
stored.
In our example, channel previously used by TMF is now used by Tylko Muzyka,
which you can now watch evenly not entering the red menu. But the stored
channel name will remain as it was before - in this case TMF.
Using this simple method you can program almost any other channels on
generally unused channel numbers in main menu.

3) Official DF-1 cards and Nokia D-box
---------------------------------------------------------------
After becoming a fan of MTV Germany (which differs from MTV Europe (UK) by
more good contents. Well, tastes differ) at the time of it's unencrypted
broadcasting on Hot Bird 1, of course, after it's encryption I wanted to
continue watching the channel.
But how ? To buy an official expensive MPEG-2 system with Cryptoworks CAM ?
The most simple way out seemed to be the DF-1 package, most likely being
influenced by which, MTV Germany switched to encrypted mode.
After some tricks I was finally able to get a paid-for DF-1 card for Basic
package (without movies and sport). Being greatly delighted by the fact of
getting the card,
I ran home, inserted it instead of my one into the d-box, but the d-box
kept
writing proudly: "Die Sendung ist nicht zu entschlusseln" on all DF-1
channels.
Unfortunately, I was unable to check the card on the d-box it arrived with.
Most likely this is the problem - the number of CAM to work with is stored
in the card. I think that all other CAMs are ignored by the card.
But this is only a thought. If I will be able to force the card to work, I
will of course
write about the way I did it.

4) NTV Plus on Intelsat 604 ? Sixty degrees east news
---------------------------------------------------------------
Already for a long time there was a strange digital package on 11.515 V
with
totally unknown contents. At VPID 40FF, APID 4100 there was a strange test
- looked like a digital picture (blackcard) was spoiled by someone at the
uplink station and after that it was back to normal again.
At the same time, RTR-Teleset started to be developed in a new way on
11.135 V, but this way didn't last long. Well, let me write about
everything
step-by-step. Today in the morning after watching the "avilable" musicvideo
block on TMF,
I pointed my dish to 60 East. I decided to test already very familiar
frequencies. How much surprised I was when I saw picture of NTV channel at
11.515 V, SR
27.492, FEC 3/4 ! The picture was just the same as on 4th terrestrial
channel in Moscow, but in perfect digital quality. At first, there were no
sound, on automatically detected APID there were some phonecalls and some
sounds
from unknown russian-speaking channels.
Video PID of NTV I was able to find at once - 42FF. Strange phonecalls and
sound of unknown channels were on APID 4100 and 4200. At APID 4300 there is
a normal NTV sound.
After trying experimenting with VPIDs, I found three more channels in this
package - black screen and 2 exactly-the-same pictures from NTV channel.
But how to
connect those pictures correctly with Audio PIDs ?
I expect the following channel plan at 11.515 V at the moment:

NTV channel (wrong sound) 41FF 4200
NTV channel (normal) 42FF 4300
NTV channel (wrong sound) 43FF 4400
How we're able to see, there are 4 channels. A very good place for NTV Plus
channels, especially in such good digital quality. Maybe - this is one of
the ways NTV Plus expected is coming true - "broadcasting the digital
package not
from GALS".
But at the moment article was created, on three channels there is just NTV
and on one - a black card. Let's wait and see.
And by the way, during today RTR-Teleset changed it's parameters several
times. At first, the signal just disappeard. In the morning the package
appeard
for some moments, used SR 9.763, FEC 5/6, and disappeard again. On PID
codes VPID 4021, APID 4022 there was no RTR. Also, during this test was
lower a bit then
usual - 11.130 V.
In couple of hours on 11.135 V appeard a stable signal. It has parameters
SR 17.429, FEC 5/6. Again, entering the PID codes didn't help, what may be
explained
by one of following versions:
1) RTR-Teleset was entirely encrypted, but still comes in 100% european DVB
MPEG-2
2) RTR-Teleset doesn't broadcast channels during this test period
3) RTR-Teleset started using MPEG-2 substandart, which uses required
adressing of recievers, evenly for Free-To-Air channels (like in case with
STS).
Example of such substandart - PowerVu.
All three versions are possible, but I think that second one is the most
possible one.

5) The Music Factory - the best of the best
---------------------------------------------------------------
And quite a lot of people seem to think this way. Dutch channel TMF keeps
broadcasting from Eutelsat II F3 at 16 East, SR 5.632, FEC 3/4, and keeps
finding
more and more fans.
Talking about the style of dutch masterpiece, it looks and sounds like VIVA
1,
but it is even more devoted to modern (especially dance) music.
Everything would be just great, if the fans of super-cool-musicvideos
didn't have some really serious problems on their way to musical
satisfaction.
Quite a long ago, at the moment I have just bought a d-box, first thing I
did at home -
pointed my dish to Eutelsat II F3, and performed "Manuelle Kanalsuche" on
TMF.
I did it in the afternoon, and d-box failed to find anything.
Later, while discovering new possibilities on my d-box and it's red menu, I
tried
to make a QPSK search on 11.024 H at 16 east. No results aswell.
The dish is too small ?
Not exactly. Once, in the morning, arround 04:00 CET, I repeated the QPSK
search.
Very unexpectedly TMF came to the screen, but the picture went off often.
I didn't notice changes to better in following minutes, and moved my dish
to a different position.
And not so long ago, when rumors about TMF moving Eutelsat II F3 to
vertical
polarization of Astra 1F were about to become reality, I repeated the
experiment
again. Beginning from 04:00 CET every 30 minutes I powered up the system
and checked the reception quality. The first experiment took place in
medium
weather conditions. At 04:00, 04:30 and 05:00 picture stopped quite often.
And with time quantity of problems decreased. At 05:30 the channel started
without problems. D-box gave exellent picture quality at the same time,
when on analogue superbeam pictures there was some "snow".
The signal was decoded by the d-box normally till 07:00 CET. Exactly at
07:00
the picture shut down, and QPSK search gave no results. What's the problem
?
Experiment was carried out almost in the center of Moscow - in Sokolniki.
Of course, my dish was surrounded by a lot of organizations using in their
job
RRLs (radiorelay lines). One of such RRLs was turned on exactly at 07:00.
Shutting down of the signal repeated every day during that week, on weekend
aswell.
But last week 07:00 shutdown was only the tradition of weekdays. On
saturday
there were no problem till 13:00 CET, when first errors started to appear.
After that signal started to decrease slowly and the picture was getting to
the screen
harder and harder. I should also say that weather conditions were exellent
that day.
On sunday problems started arround 09:00 already, but there were heavy
clouds.
Well, I think we finally can thank CANAL+ for something.
After having Nethold plans destroyed, most likely those CANAL+ guys
killed plans of TMF's move to Astra. Also, the channel, which had to take
over the 11.024 H frequency, Euro 7, doesn't exist anymore. So we can
expect TMF to play it's music from 16 East for some more time.
By the way, I suddenly discovered that we can't be 100% sure in a
possibility of
TMF Nordic start. But this is the topic to be discussed in simple
sat-moscow,
not in sat-moscow digital special.

6) Rumor or reality - Irdeto hacked ?

Last sunday I had a chance to meet one market, located in northern part of
Moscow,
and also I was able to find a stand of a satellite company, as said on the
advertisement paper, dealer of "Universal Communications". According to the
words of their salesman, their company holds a very big secret. This secret
is the ability
to watch DF-1 in clear without any CAMs / cards on a simple d-box,
just like an unencrypted channel.
They were afraid to be chased by police, so they asked me not to give out
info about them. But this didn't prevent them from giving me a phonenumber
to use to
contact this "superhacker".
Of course, I will keep you informed about everything I'll find in the
digital world.
As soon as I'll have a chance to call them, I will announce - is Irdeto
really so easy to hack ? Generally, such words sound not enough convincing,
but if these hackers will
be able to show the result of their work, it will make people in Irdeto
company
think a lot about finding a brand new and more effective way to protect
digital channels.
If someone of you performed and succeeded in experiments of this kind,
pls e-mail me. Also, there is a rumor that MPEG-2 reciever called XSat
(with Viaccess CAM !!!) is able to easily open DF-1 without any card.
