The Ariane launch of flight V103 with JCSAT 5 is rescheduled from 13 to
21 November, which automatically pushes the scheduled launch of
Eutelsat's Hot Bird 4 another week back from 8 to 15/16 December.
However there is still some confusion which satellite(s) will be on the
last launch in this calendar year. Some sources see the Intelsat 804 on
flight 804, some sources report Hot Bird 4 together with BSat 1B on this
launch.
The Echostar 3 launch with Atlas is most probably delayed to 9-10
October.

EUTELSAT RECEPTION FIGURES

Eutelsat says more people than ever are tuning into broadcasts from its
Hot Bird position at 13 degrees East over Europe. Nearly 65 million
homes in 38 countries in Europe, North Africa and the near Middle East
have access to the satellites, said Eutelsat.
According to the studies, by mid-1997, of the 86.9m homes connected to a
cable or community network or equipped for direct-to-home (DTH)
reception,
64.1million, or nearly 75 percent, are receiving channels broadcast from
13
degrees East.
The new figures represent a growth of 4 million homes over figures
released
by Eutelsat in mid-1996. The strongest expansion was in DTH and
community
reception which increased by nearly 30 per cent (from 12.3m homes in
1996
to 15.8m homes in 1997), far outstripping overall satellite reception
which
grew by 13.5 per cent (from 30.3m homes in 1996 to 34.4m homes in 1997).

INDIAN MEDIA LAWS

India has temporarily relaxed its strict media laws after the death of
Mother Teresa. The move will allow foreign broadcasters such as CNN and
the BBC to cover the the five-hour state funeral next Saturday.
India's broadcast rules normally don't allow any satellite uplinks of
foreign companies from Indian soil.

Russian channel TB6 looses the additional 850 figure in its logo just
after a few days of transmission.

Tests of Channel IBC/ThaiSky TV could been observed on 3.430 GHz, V, in
good quality, better than the reception of Army Channel 5.
Sourced from a standard digital receiver (with on-screen menus) several
channels such as CNN, HBO, IBC-1, IBC-2, IBC-3 found there way for short
periods to the up-link station. The audio on a subcarrier on 6.60 MHz
was clear audable.
The channel is already transmitting a package in MPEG-2 from Thaicom 2
in the Ku-Band on 12.666 GHz, V, SR 27500, FEC 2/3, using IRDETO
encryption.

BAZTAB Entertainment TV is presently not detectable on 4.035 GHz, H. At
the usual transmission time only an strong empty carrier appears.

Transponder 38, previous Vijay TV, on 4.180 GHz, R, has been observed
this week with test cards, and various feed transmissions, lately with
preparations for the funeral of Mother Teresa, transmitted for a Korean
TV station.

A Qatari TV channel will be launched on the vacant transponder 12, 3.946
GHz, LC. This transponder is unused since Canal France International was
dropped from the satellite system after accidentally broadcasting a
portion of a film with adult contents two months ago.
The yet unnamed Qatari channel is expected to launch in the coming week.

Any news on the re-appearance of CFI in the Ku-Band couldn't be
detected.
The regular testcard of Yemen TV on transponder 22, 4.180 GHz, LC,
changed its text to Yemen-R.TV

RAI's digital package on transponder 54, 11.804 GHz, V, has been altered
as followed after the end of the Venice Film Festival:
The Teche RAI e luce and Teche RAI on demand channels have ceased, and
have been replaced by:
VPID: 4204 APID: 428E Test 1 (presenting RAI-uno)
VPID: 4205 APID: 428F Test 2 (presenting RAI-due)
Luce on the demand with VPID: 4206 and APID: 4290 has ceased. As
reported earlier in SAT-MidEast: RAI SAT 1, RAI SAT 2 and RAI SAT 3 will
be launched on September 29th on these channels, Free-To-Air.

A most reliable source whisperred some exiting data onto my
hard-disk...!
Check coming Monday, September 15th, from 06:OO am CET onwards, for
first signs of activation of the satellites payload.
Hot Bird 3 will at that time be positioned at 28.2 East, and the first
TWTA's to be activated are those of transponder 72, 12.149 GHz, V and
transponder 77, 12.245 GHz, H.
All other frequencies must be known by now, otherwise can be looked up
in the above mentioned SATCO DX address.

Animal Planet on 11.055 GHz, H has additional Polish audio on the 7.20
MHz subcarrier.

Undertitling in three Nordic languages (D/S/N) will be transmitted soon
using the TeleText services on page 691, 692 and 693.
SME Comment: Animal Planet will be transferred to a Hot Bird 3 frequency
commencing October, most probably using a superbeam transponder.

Radio Israel from Jerusalem (mostly in Arabic) can be heard from the
audio subcarrier 7.20 MHz on transponder 1U, 11.015 GHz, V, the
frequency of the Israeli Channel 3.

After a strong PAL test card the IRIB test card appeared renewed on
3.980 GHz, R, with sound on both audio subcarriers 6.20 and 6.80 MHz.
At various times transmissions of the IRIB exterior service could be
observed, but there is no regularity in the broadcasts yet.

It is remarkable that lately an increase on powerfull carriers and test
cards from this satellite can be observed. It seems that after the
launch of both PAS-5 and PAS-6 more transponder are switched to the
eastern beam.
Some observations: 12.605 GHz, V: ETT3-HUELVA with audio on 6.60, 12.730
GHz, V, 12.701 GHz, both H & V, with various sports feeds in PAL and
NTSC.
