THE HEADLINES IN THIS REPORT:

- Showtime
- PAS-4 rumours
- TRT ceasure
- Bits & Pieces

Due to the present lack of interesting news, the SAT-MidEast pages will
be coming every second day, for the time being.
All "real" news will be submitted immediately, of course.

Express 6, 80 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/e6.html
---------
In the night from 06-07 January on transponder 14, 3.875 GHz, Rc,
Intersputnik showed a nice Happy New Year Greeting including a picture
of Father Christmas. Honoured of course were the Coptic/Orthodox Xmas
festivities.

PANAMSAT 4, 68.5 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/pas4.html
----------
Since yesterday is the availabilty of the Discovery channel now also
visible in the on-screen menu's of the SHOWTIME DStv package. Strange
however is that they only appear after the second switch to the channel
20. The initial notice still says FUT1. Most probably a manual re-tuning
has to take place first. Until further notice Discovery is called a
"bonus channel", without further payments due.

In the second half of February, another three channels will be broadcast
in the SHOWTIME/1stNET package e.g.: Library (classic movies), Style
(woman's interest channel), and the Hallmark Channel (movies for TV).

Still in the rumours corner belongs however the soon to be expected
ceasure of the complete SHOWTIME/1stNET DStv package from Panamsat 4.
It's said that the clean up of Ku-Band channels lately on the Arabsat
2A, is to make place to accomodate this recommendable package.
It could be true, then all channels are already broadcasted
(in-officially) on the ART transponder 3 and 9, 12.563 and 12.685 GHz,
H, resp.
Transponder 5 and 7, 12.605 and 12.646 GHz, resp., equally horizontal
polarized, are still free (or made free), providing a good bases for a
continues MPEG2 frequency spectrum.

Let's wait and see, I like this kind of surprises.

Btw. Showtime has also upgraded his internet access pages, mainly for
faster downloading (a text-only version is now also available). In this
text version a link to the TELE-satellit free SAT-MidEast mailing list
(including the subscription address) is presented on the index page.
Just take a renewed look on this interesting site.

INTELSAT 602, 63 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/i602.html
------------
The Italian Mediaset channels, Italia 1, Rete 4 and Canale 5 are
supposed to cease in the second half of February, latest March 1st from
the Intelsat 602.
They will be then only receivable from the Hot Bird 2, 13 East in MPEG2.

Turksat 1C, 42 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/t1c.html
----------
TRT International, Avrasya (Euroversion) ceased today on transponder 12,
10.971 GHz, H. Transmissions on the West beam continued.
ATV had another break of service today, due to an infringement of
broadcasting ethics on 24 December 1996. Transmissions have been
restarted at 23:00 CET, midnight in Turkey.

ARABSAT 2B, 30.8 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/a2b.html
----------
It has become now very unlikely that the Arabsat 2B will be taken in
operation prior to the Holy Month of Ramadan, beginning Friday, as no
sign of any re-start of testing could be observed.

ARABSAT 2A, 26 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/a2a.html
----------
JVC, Al Jezeerah, could be observed today with a two channel sound
broadcast in the late afternoon. Arabic on 6.60 MHz, Original sound
(English, Spanish) on 7.50 MHz. Normal is a double mono signal during
transmissions and a real stereo sound during off broadcast times
(accompanieng the test card).

HOT BIRD 1, 13 East, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/i602.html
----------
MCM Euromusique on the Hot Bird 1 transponder 5, 11.307 GHz, V, as well
as MCM Africa on the Intelsat 601, 27.5 East, transponder 20L 3.650 GHz,
Rc, were without sound today in the morning. Just empty carriers on 7.02
and 7.20 MHz were available. Normal operation was restored later in the
day.

AMOS 1, 4 West, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/amos1.html
------
Transponder 1L, 10.968 GHz, V, was used for a feed in the early morning,
while on Intelsat the transmissions of KOL Israel 1 took place normally.
Transponder 5U, 11.596 GHz, V, with a test signal since January 5th,
was switched off tonight.

PANAMSAT 1, 45 West, SATCO-DX: http://www.satcodx.com/pas1.html
----------
Since a couple of days a very weak undefined test card can be received
from this position on 4.150 GHz. I can't determine from here which exact
polarization. Maybe somebody in the west has a better signal.

Best regards,

Henk C. Room / Sat-MidEast / Cairo - Egypt
