Italian Satellite and Media news edited by Branislav Pekic

PEARSON INTERESTED IN MEDIASET STAKE
It seems that at the recently concluded NATPE television market held in New
Orleans talks took place between representatives of Mediaset, Italy's
biggest private TV operator and the U.K. based media group Pearson.
According to a Mediaset executive interviewed by the Italian daily
"Corriere della Sera", in the past weeks, several meetings between
representatives of the two European media giants took place, but no
decision has been reached. It seems that Pearson is seeking to buy a
significant stake in Mediaset and sources within the Italian media industry
think that the deal is "more than probable".

RAI RE-LAUNCHES INTERNET SITE
The Italian public broadcaster RAI has re-launched its Web site,
significantly increasing the information on its activities that was already
available in the past 2 years. The new site offers access to 38 different
"Web pages" which are continuously updated. Among them are links to RAI's
radio services (including 4 live editions of the news bulletins in Real
Audio), sports news (including photos of the goals from the Italian
football league games), program schedules for terrestrial and satellite TV
channels. There is also the possibility of searching RAI's massive radio
archive as well as a photo archive containing more than 18,000 images.
According to RAI's vicedirector general, Guido Vannucchi, they plan to
expand the Web site to offer business (i.e. pay) services, but this will
depend on the evolution of the market and of RAI in general.
RAI's Web site can be found at: http://www.rai.it
Internet. Trentotto indirizzi, aggiornati in tempo reale, informazioni
sulle trasmissioni radiofoniche, televisive e via satellite, quattro

NEW CABLE-ONLY MOVIE CHANNEL
A new cable-only movie channel is set to join Stream's bouquet in May. The
new channel will be called Universal Italia and is a joint venture with the
Hollywood movie studio Universal Pictures. The director general of the new
channel will be Roberto Pace, ex-vice director at Canale 5. Universal
Italia will mainly air U.S. made movies, but there will also be some
European and Italian titles. Estimates are that the potential audience of
the new service from day one will be around 50,000.
bouquet Stream conta attualmente circa 50 mila abbonati in Italia.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR RAI
This past week has also seen major personnel changes at the Italian public
broadcaster RAI. The top post of president has gone to Roberto Zaccaria,
while the Pierluigi Celli has taken up the post of director general
previously held by Franco Iseppi. RAI has also a new administrative council
whose members are Stefano Balassone, Vittorio Emiliani, Alberto Contri and
Giampiero Gamaleri. One of the first decisions the new administrative
council will take concerns the future of RAI's third TV channel, RAI Tre. A
project for financing the channel, which will have to renounce publicity,
will have to be presented by April.
Alberto Contri e Giampiero Gamaleri. Uno dei primi atti del nuovo consiglio

pubblicità.

ITALIANS WANT MORE NEWS AND CULTURE ON TV
The Italian TV viewers want more information and cultural programs and less
variety, sports and movies. This is one of the conclusions of a recent
survey conducted by Eurispides among 1,000 Italians. The survey also showed
that viewers in the age group 15-24 years and women prefer the Mediaset TV
channels (Rete 4, Italia 1 and Canale 5) while older viewers, especially
those over 60, and men primarily watch the public RAI channels.

NEWS IN BRIEF
- In the past two months, the private Italian TV network TMC has modernized
it's transmitter sites. It currently covers 74% of Italy with it's signal.
- Due to financial problems, on January 29th, The Weather Channel has
closed four of it's European services, among them Il Canale Meteo, aimed at
Italy. According to Radio Sweden's "Media Scan", the rival English-language
only Weather Network is considering taking over some of the European
operations.
- Here is a list of upcoming Italian football league games that will be
transmitted live on Telepiù Nero which is transmitted as part of Telepiù's
digital package on the EUTELSAT HOT BIRD satellites. Unscrambled C-band
feeds of Italian league games have recently been noted on the INTELSAT 60
