RTL in trouble
- Low ratings for Germanys No. 1 Station
mcr Cologne. The leader on the German TV-Market, RTL-Television, has a bad
start this year. The lowest ratings since 1992, with a market share of only
14.2 percent. In comparison: 16.5 percent in December 1996 and 14.9 percent a
year later - falling steady. Station-Manager Helmut Thoma will leave RTL with
age 60 in 1999. He never approved of Co-owner Bertelsmann Media Group plans
for digital television. Problem is: Will Information-Director Hans Mahr and
Program-Director Peter Conrad leave as well, both are intimate friends of
Thoma. Possible that all three will have to go, to give the new Manager all
freedoms he needs.
It will be a hard year for RTL and Leo Kirch is cheering. His Moviestation Pro
Sieben has steady rising ratings.

Expensive Television
- ARD/ZDF most expensive
mcr Baden Baden/Mainz. ARD and ZDF, the German public stations, are the most
expensive public television stations on the planet. But they offer the most
varied choice of programming. This is the result of a recent study. The study
recommends, that ARD and ZDF try to focus on newsprograms, instead of buying
expensive movies and sporting events.

SAT-TIP
- Star Trek Deep Space Nine on TV3+
Danish station TV3+, which can be found on the TV-SAT Satellite at 0.8 deg.
West, is currently airing the first Deep Space Nine Season. Time is saturdays
at around 22:50 CET. TV3+ broadcasts in encrypted D2-MAC.
